This was supposed to be a downloadable txt file but I decided to post it here, that's why the formatting is all over the place: CopyPaste. Maybe one day I'll fix it.
First of all, a huge thank you goes to Flamethrower who not only basically translated about 1/3 of the
game but also hacked the hackable and modified the impossible (fixing a lot of stuff in the process)
and who put up with me for requests and other things.
Another big thank you goes to Kitsune who gave us permission to use his translation, and so we used it
for the parts that we hadn't yet translated, reworking them in some points and fixing where there was
something to fix. Another thank you goes to all the other guys who took part in this. Since Ao uses some
files from Zero, probably something you translated there went in this game too. Also, I am sure
someone else must have translated something for this (parts of the prologue?) but I don't remember
who you are. A girl, I believe.
About the version that was leaked: it's beta10. Some stuff was fixed after that and should've been included in beta11, but that never saw the light.
Will you be able to play from start to finish experiencing the game 100%? Yes (duh, you've already played it).
Is it complete? No. Will it ever be completed? Don't ask me, I'm not involved in the project anymore.
What's missing?
-Many scenes should have been reworked to sound more natural;
-Missing a general check about that/which, 's genitives, ". and .", alright/all right;
-Missing a general check on receptionists, butlers, maids and so on. If they suddenly don't sound
as polite as they should, there you have it;
-Missing a huge check on ", but..." to see if many of those can be taken away. Did you read on Kotaku
about that guy who counted all the ... you have to see in Xenogears to reach the end of the game? Wow.
-Territory of Sign should be Territory of Symbol;
-Some lines will go out of tabs, especially descriptions in battle;
-Same for some of KeA's lines in extra mode, but there characters limits are super, super strict;
-The name cards in extra mode were not touched, so you can see some oddities like Sizuku, Kirika (well,
she actually should be called like that, not with the L), one of the possible romanizations of Lechter's
name and other things;
-The Japanese/English original graphics introducing places where left intact for your own pleasure.
Suggestion: leave the characters' bio under Prestory alone. There are some spoilers there that will ruin
things for you. A lot.
Do not:
-Apply a patch above an already patched image, in case an official release comes out. Always go from a clean
image;
-You can load saves between different patches, even use your original Japanese saves, BUT NOT end of
chapters saves. If you load one of those between different versions, the game will crash.
To cheaters:
-There are many cheats out there for Ao. Some will break your game forever, so beware.
Infinite items and all items x something apply to event items too, and that's bad in some cases.
-Never use those cheats with a Fragment in your inventory if it is the first time you are
talking to Rebecca or if it is your second time or more and you use the Hand over fragments option.
The first time you will give the Fragment automatically (all those in your inventory), same with the
Hand over option later. You can't choose to hand over only 1 at a time.
The problem is that you must not decript the entire database before the start of the final
dungeon (when you will find your 10th and last Fragment) or else your game will crash badly when the
achievement pops up. This didn't happen to me on a NG+, so I guess the problem is the achievement pop up.
-The infinite items cheat or multiple items (I think) can influence the tickets you have to
spend at Michelam. Every time you use one, one of your friends can't be selected anymore.
Remember that the game progresses after you consume all those items. If you forget to keep at
least five available friends to spend your last 5 tickets with, I think you will be stuck there forever.
Remember that you can't deactivate the infinite items cheat unless you completely exit the game
to xmb, to clean the ram.
-The infinite items cheat and possibly the multiple items too MUST NOT BE ACTIVE if you want
to trade some medals for the Fishing Baits Set you can get from the bunny girl at the casino.
When you exit those screens, the game will crash really badly.
-This is just a glitch. Mariabell will give you a support request during the game and the receptionist
will issue you an IBC card to go to her office. After you are over with the request, your card should
expire, but if you have the infinite items cheat on, you can keep it and keep going to 16F or B5 when
you should not. If you do, the researchers will always say the same lines (of course, they don't have
any others) and Mariabell, although missing from her office for story reasons...will still be there,
invisible, at her chair, saying the same stuff.
-The auto fishing cheat will save you a lot of time, but I suggest you to not use it if you plan to
undergo an Angler Duel. You can get stuck and need a soft reset to your xmb to solve the problem.
RANT TIME RANT TIME RANT TIME RANT TIME RANT TIME RANT TIME RANT TIME RANT TIME RANT TIME RANT TIME RANT TIME
While playing the game you may come up with some questions here and there, so, here is a
mega rant covering lots of stuff. This is basically a big trivia about many things you could
be curious about. The most spoilerous things are saved for last after a [SPOILERS] tag.
-In case you don't know or have doubts, Jona reads "Yona", Joshua reads "Yoshua", Cao reads "Zao"
(play CSII if you still don't know how that sounds) and Keddo as kiddo (that's the idea behind her nickname).
I still read the Jo is Joshua as in JoJo...it'll never go away from my brain.
-The Elite Four have all strange nicknames.
Sharkman is a man of the sea, reminding you of the fishermen in old manga and anime. I chose "sea"
instead of "ocean" because of his song, where he says he is a man of the sea. It sounded better.
Triton seems the type of kind old fisherman, in his kimono and straw hat. I guess it has silver in his
nickname due to his hair color.
For Narses I followed what XS decided, so Crazy Wave he is, and since he is "crazy", well, his way of
speaking is too. He speaks with a lot of Eglish words with their readings adapted to the Japanese language.
The effect is weird, so I kept it in his lines too. XS instead translated everything in a normal way and put
some super weird words here and there to make him sound odd. I hope you can make out what he is saying
in my version. From XS I kept "piscine beauty" because it was too perfect.
Kaguya reminds you of the typical "queen" character, with her "ho ho ho" laugh. That is why I decided
to change her nickname from Dragon King Palace (Ryūgū) to Dragon Queen (it was also to match the two
words nicknames convention). By the way, the Ryūgū appears in the Urashima Tarō fairy tale, while Kaguya
appears in the Taketori Monogatari. Two nice stories, ultra known in Japan.
As for Lakelord, well, his name is perfect. You know, a pond, or a lake has got one very big game who is
the king of that place, or the lord. Lakelord is a perfect surname for that kind of character.
I wasn't planning to do this, but here's a sort of transliteration dictionary for what Narses says:
uinshita - won, they made the Japanese past tense of an English verb...
byurihoo - beautiful
misuteriasu - mysterious
natto - not
fumu - hm
ofu koosu - of course

mosuto - most
fisshu - fish
shinkingu - thinking
ueitingu - waiting
chekku - check
nooto - notebook
gureito - great
dyueru - duel (he says faito/fight, but since XS localized theses fights as duels I had to change it.)
saizu - size
uinaa - winner
puraizu - prize
wan taimu chansu - one time chance
dyueringu - duelling (same, he says faitingu/fighting)
noo guddo - no good
agein - again
kyacchi - catch
veri - very
rein - rain
kooketisshu - coquettish
noiji - noisy
sutea - stare
sofisutikeiteddo - sophisticated
setto - set

eburitaimu - everytime
bigin - begin
mai - my
ittsa - it's
ikusupenshibu - expensive
roo puraisu - low price
seimu - same
misuteiku - mistake
-Fish names. Those are a mix of real fish names, fish names XS had already translated and some with their
Falcom made up names. I wanted to go with all real fish names at first, but identifying all of them was
a very hard task, so we did a mix.
-Randy's nicknames.
He uses aibō (bud, buddy, pal, partner) for Lloyd, ojō (milady, young lady, young miss) for Elie.
He uses Tiosuke for, well, Tio. Suke is a suffix for old male names. Usually, in very very old novels,
characters with the suke suffix in their names have all the job of servants, assistants, helpers. Well,
suke has those meanings. I don't remember who, but someone came up with peTiote and that was really cute
and all and so we kept that. Considering that Randy uses all male suffixes for little girls...maybe RunTio
would have been better?
For KeA, he fuses Kii with bō, a suffix for boys, so I turned Kiibō into Keddo. For Jona he uses kō (prince)
in a sarcastic way to tease him. I think we used great Jona, since he always tells to himself he is a great
genius hacker and so on. I hope Tio punishes him.
For Sully, he uses zō, something for monks but also used for little boys, and so Shurizō became Sullboy.
Something nice to notice is that Randy uses dear/sweet with all the girls (like Fran, Ran, Filia, Rixia,
Ries...) but he is alway as normal as possible towards Ilya and Cecil. Maybe because they are older than him?
Must be something else.
-Wazy's name was so cool as Łazy (it reads "wazy") and Flame went the extra mile to code this Ł character
into the game fonts to be used but then XS came with their Wazy in CSII and so we followed.
Were they fearing all the jokes about Lazy?
-Falcom is way too inconsistent. From CGF and CSGF to CPD, CSPD, C.S.P.D. and so on.
Also, CSPS appears on a signboard, an intro cut scene, at the info desk... So they really mean it as
Crossbell State Police School...but XS translated it in a different way in the world map of CSII.
Falcom wrote Michelam correctly everywhere except in two cases where it is Micheram due to a simple r/l
Japanese problem. In Zero they put Wanderland instead of Wonderland, in Ao, in the original script, they
wrote MICHLAM and NWL instead MWL. It's also a surprise they considered Wonderland as two separate words...
The ferris wheel is called Grand Ferris Wheel in two occasions, but then it-s always ferris wheel,
so we decided to stick with that.
It's not clear how the CGF companies are called. A guy says his is the 3rd one, but then Mireille says
hers is 01... Then we have some characters' nicknames. They write War Ogre but they want it to read it simply
as Ogre. Then they forget that and we have the Red Ogre...but then they want you to read is as Ogre Rosso...
but then they forget that and go back to Red Ogre...to then go back again to Ogre Rosso.
Falcom, please decide. Although I don't know what can I expect from guys who went with Schwarz Auktion,
Black Auction, Auktion and Auction however they pleased to indicate the same thing. Think a little about
Tranlsator-kun, will you? ;__; And those are just the first examples that came to mind.
Another notable thing is that Lechter Arudel was kept with the last romanization of his name instead of
Lector Alandor...maybe he even had a different romanization in Trails 3d. It's also not clear why Falcom went
the extra mile to give every street a proper name on signboards to just then always reference them as west
street, back street and so on. Some of the original names (on a PC with high quality textures it's easier to
read them...):
romal street - west street
sankt street - residential street
millennia street - entertainment district
bizet alley - back street
capella street - east street
-Michelam : Mishelam = Michey : Mishy, feat. Miichie/Mishette
So, this place is called Misheramu and graphically written as Michelam everywhere. Of course its mascot
takes its name from that both graphically and at a sound level, so, Misshi->Michey, also plasterd on your
car coloring. But, someone translated it in the wrong way a long time ago in...Memories of Celceta? and so
that cat with the dejected face is now scarred for life as Mishy. And they also went the extra mile to change
textures and stuff... They really hate Michey. Also, if someone hasn't noticed it, Michey is a reference to
Mickey Mouse. They are both super popular mascots of theme parks, loved by children and all. They go
around the park bringing joy, and they do parades. Their names are graphically similar too, Michey is
also gray (like a mouse) for the most part. I can only suppose Falcom went with a cat mascot since cats
are all the rage in Japan (and when you think about an opposite to a mouse, you come up with a cat).
Also, they both have a girl in their life, but in Japan little sisters are more powerful than girlfriends,
so, here comes Miishe. I kept the mii part, put the ch to remind of Michelam and Michey and end it with ie
to remind it of Minnie. And so, Miichie was born. I think XS went with Mishette. I could agree if the name
were Mishe, but it's Miishe. What about that long i? One thing I agree upon though, is their laugh.
Michechey is simply horrible compared to Mishishi.
-Monsters' names. Oh great Aidios, this would take forever if done properly, but let's see just some things
here too. Zero had two tabs for monsters. One it never used and the gargantuan one it used in the game.
Ao has got only the gargantuan one. Nice, at least I didn't translate stuff just for the sake of it.
-Why a Geerbad is a Geerbad? Because the original is Gumaarai, a play on Araiguma, Badger, and so...Geerbad.
-Why is Yah-Kah called like that and not Mosquito something as in CSII? Because I forgot to change it. Eh.
But, Yah-Kah is way cooler. I think it-s another pun on a Japanese word, kaya, mosquito net...
Maybe I should have called it Toneet-Mosquii or something like that. Tohoho, what a regret.
-Creepy Sheep. I mean, XS called the Tomatoman, "Tomartian". Cool? Yeah.
So why Hitsujin (Hitsuji-Sheep + Jin-Man) is not...Sheepian? Sheepn? No, Creepy Sheep. I don't even...
By the way, they have a move that references to a 1977 martial arts movie called 激殺!邪道拳, Sould of Chiba
(Violent Death! Way of the Evil Fist, Soul of Chiba)(aka Soul of Bruce Lee).
In the game we have 激殺!ヒツジン阿修羅拳 for Creepy Sheep and 激殺!タヴィジン阿修羅拳 for Wandering Sheep, so I
made a mix into Violent Death! Asura Kick! Soul of Creepy Sheep!. At first I chose "fist" too, and sadly this
survived into Wandering Sheep's move, but then, by looking at how they act in battle, well, they throw
kicks, so "kick" was more on the spot.
-Bejoe is Bijou in original, but since it looks like a Beholder...Bejoe. Maybe they wanted to do a pun
with Bijoux? Lol, considering how they look...
-Hoeee...
KeA uses this here and there. It's like a cute "whaaat?" and I left it intact. I think Sakura from
Card Captor Sakura used it too, but I could be wrong. Too much time has passed since I read it.
-Confusing NPCs' names.
Henri is Ryū's and Momo's friend, Henry is Elie's grandfather. Ami is Logy's sister (in Mainz), while
Amy is Zell's girlfriend (Michelam residential area). Marlow is a miner in Mainz, Marlowe is a
Republican Inspector. I hope I got them right, I get confused too.
-Speaker vs. Chairman.
Hartmann's title in Japanese means both. I used Chairman, I liked it a lot. I used that in Zero.
Then I played CSII before Ao, got spoliers everywhere, and a certain someone is called Speaker.
Then I go look at that character's name card in Ao and it says Chairman. And so, Chairman it is.
-Is Sergei a Chief or a Section Chief? A Section Chief, naturally. We used simply Chief when the
guys talk about him and Section Chief when other people, not from the SSS, speak about him.
Please don't think that Sergei has a higher grade than Pierre, for instance. Pierre is one of the
vice chiefs of the police. Yeah, they have more vice chiefs. How many? Who knows. At least two.
So, when Dudley receives a call and says Section Chief, he's talking to HIS Section Chief.
After all, when he talks to Sergei he always says "Mr. Sergei".
-This is a cultural difference. I don't know how it works in your countries, but in Japan when they say
1F they mean the floor with the entrance to a building. Where I am from, that's the ground floor.
For me, 1F is the first floor I find up the first flight of stairs I climb. I live on 1F, while for a
Japanese my floor would be 2F. We kept everything like it was in the game, without changing stuff in the
elevator floors selection and so on. There are also textures everywhere marking what floor you are on...
Again, for me it is really weird. In a Japanese translation test I did oh so many years ago, I had a
gal living on 2F. You can't imagine how many of the other guys there kept 2F instead of writing 1F...
-Garrelia. Well, Falcom uses Garelia, but what I think though, is that they are both a
mistranslation (I don't know if on purpose or not) of the Italian word "galleria". With those ll and
r, putting it in Japanese and then romanizing it back, all hell could break loose. Galleria means
tunnel. If you think about how that fortress is... it's just a tunnel dug into a mountain with
a fortress built around and inside of it. We'll never know? I guess.
-The eyes of Jingo. Oh, how I love that little one. So, why Dingo was changed to Jingo in Ao? Flame told me
it sounded really weird, and suggested to change it, and so, we changed it to its other possible reading.
I know what a dingo is, but did it really sound that weird? Really? Ok.
-"Uncle". To Lloyd, Cecil's parents are like a real uncle and aunt, so I kept them normally,
without the "", but to Elie, Dieter is not really akin to a real uncle, but more to someone
she saw many times when a kid being friends with Bell and so on. So this is why I always used "uncle".
Sir was too formal, mister too...and they didn't work well in many, many lines. So, "uncle".
-Is it Saber Viper or Saber Vipers? Well, the group is Viper. You can see the symbol at Ignis, a
saber with 1 viper around...and if you didn't notice, it comes from Wald's wooden sword with a chain
all around it. They are called Vipers or Saber Vipers when they talk about the members, not the group.
I hope we got the difference right.
-Kitty talks for smart people. You can see some of the cats' lines have a translation between [].
This comes from a certain file from a certain Kiseki game. The problem is, either someone messed up
with the vowels, - and tildes or Falcom did a bit what they want by putting in stuff that didn't appear
in that file. That's why some lines are translated, while some others nyanya, not. Simply put, there
are no correspondencies in that file for those meows. Too bad.
-Rosenberg or Rozenberg. Well, when the game throws at you Rosenberg and seconds later the camera
has also the studio sign in the scene and it says Rozenberg, you have another example about Falcom not
being consistent, or QA sleeping (like with Central Square/Central Plaza and others).
I stuck to Rosenberg since it seemed to me the most suited for Meister Jörg. Too bad his name
card doesn't solve the mystery. At least it tells us that they used Meister for "old man". Ok.
-Why did I choose that title for Agnes in the Sunny Place?
Well, the original is Hidamari no Agnes. I didn't know how to put that hidamari no (sun spot? sunny spot?)
and so I asked Google-san and I found something interesting. There is a novel called Hidamari no kanojo
by Koshigaya Osamu published in 2011 (adapted to movie in 2013). The official international title is
Girl in the Sunny Place. Ao came out at the end of september 2011, while the book is from June 1. It
could be that who wrote Agnes read that novel, or at least the title, and used it for Agnes? I don't know
if he/she read the novel and took inspiration from it, because you also need to take into consideration the
release dates, although, considering how much these guys wrote for a Kiseki in such a short amount of time,
it could be possible. In the end, I snatched the translation and Agnes in the Sunny Place was born.
-Greatswords. X's uses some nice weapons with cool sounding names... I should say that the sounds are
cooler than their meaning. I decided to leave them in Japanese since X's come from the East and I thought
they would fit the character way better...although I must admit some things in the game are a bit of a mess.
Either you use all japanised Chinese names or you use all Chinese names...but when you have Falcom using
Rixia Mao, Heiyue, Cao and Kirika Rouran making themselves a mix...you can only jump into the fray.
That's why you have qilin, qinggong and neigong instead of kirin, keikō and naikō but Xilun instead of Shiron,
Ling instead of Rin (and thinking about it, why did I call her Ling if Falcom chose Kirika Rouran instead
of her Chinese name?) and so on. That goes with X's greatswords too. Some sounds Japanese, others sounds a
a japanised fusion of Chinese sounds. A mix. ...Well, let's get to the swords.
八咫烏 Yatagarasu. It's a mythical raven. I guess you saw the bird in some Megaten games too.
黒鶫 Kurotsugumi. A "black thrush", turdus cardis, Japanese thrush. Cute bird.
降魔不知火 Gōma Shiranuhi. Gōma mean to conquer the devil, while shiranuhi (or shiranui, I used the oldest
sounding reading) is a sea fire, a mysterious light appearing on the sea. Japanese folklore has so many of
these mysterious fires appearing either on the sea or on land...usually spirits of the dead, or some kind
of yōkai.
霊剣・莫邪 Reiken - Bakuya. Reiken is "spirit sword", but more intended as a sword with mystic powers,
wondrous sword, virtuous sword... and then there's the bakuya, a sword of a Chinese legend called Moye and
it reads Bakuya in Japanese. If you're into Fate, chances are you know it. I don't know why in CSII the
reiken part is missing, maybe XS' Translator-kun(chan?) or someone else didn't like that extra.
曳影之剣 Eieinoken. This appears to be another Chinese mythical sword, called Yeying, so Yeyingzhijian.
It should mean something like Shadow Puller Sword. More or less...
Bonus: Arios' sword is 利剣「隼風」 Riken "Hayakaze". Riken means sharp sword and hayakaze means falcon wind.
Now, why did I use hayakaze instead of shunpū? I don't remember at all. Maybe to give his tachi a Japanese
name...but considering that it's got that riken before it, another japanised Chinese reading should have
been a logical choice... Hm. Next!
-Kai. Why some items end with kai? Well, XS used kai too, so, why not? I was surprised though, because
改 can have so many meanings, even II (as in 2) and EX. So I was using II for all those items...but then
CSII came and who am I to not follow into senpai's footsteps? And so, kai.
-Cats. This マリー can be both Mary and Marie. Considering Sunita's personality, maybe I should have called her Marie.
No problem for Elisabeth/Blackie(Kuro), a fitting name for a high-class stylish black cat of a powerful man like
Hartmann. As for Koppe, I had thought for two seconds to change his name to Mr. Tiddles...but no.
Koppe reminds me of koppepan, a type of bread that's a sort of a mix between a french coupé and a hot dog bun.
I don't remember which color is Koppe, but if he's bread colored it would be perfect...although I remember
seeing an illustration of Tio playing with a black cat an Zeit lying behind her...
-Did you notice that when it rains or there's a sunset, what you see from inside the cathedral doesn't change?
It's always clear weather. I think that when the sun sets at Michelam you keep seeing it normally from Mirror
Castle too, although from the ferris wheel the time changes. Quite strange they messed up with such details.
[SPOILERS, only for those who completed the game]
-Ashram. This is interesting, because among her possible romanizations, Ursula was a very likely candidate.
In Zero, I thought that calling an NPC Ursula working at St. Ursula could be cool. She was Ursula for some
time. Then I changed it to Ashram, because, an Ursula working at St. Ursula was not so cool after all.
Then I play Ao and doggy tells me that the Saint and the White Wolf story actually has a different ending
than the novel, that Ursula survives, marries the knight and their descendants still live in those lands...
Hoooooooooooly shhhhhhhh, don't tell me that Ashram is...so I should have...oh boy... And like that, for
minutes, sweat, panic, accelerated pulse... I decided to change it back, eventually.
I kept playing the game, reached St. Ursula, the story went on, there's a cute scene with Cecil and
Zeit where she pets him and then Zeit stays outside because he doesn't want to throw the patients in a panic.
So that's another scene where Cecil feels extremely at ease with Zeit...and that's where I realized that
it has been always implied that Cecil is Ursula's descendant. Duh, even Dieter says that rumors go that
Cecil is like Ursula's second coming. Eh, you notice this one better when you replay the game. Then I
kept playing, finished it, started an NG+ to check other things and this time I did something I didn't do
the first time...when your visits are over in that part and Zeit joins you back, you can actually enter the
hospital with him and go around as you please. I didn't do it the first time, I completely forgot to do that
(after all, Zeit didn't want to enter to not send the patients into a panic, right? But now it's fine...).
Well, if you go speak to Cecil who is now working, Zeit clearly says to himself (and to the player) that
she really is Ursula's descendant. YEAH. Thank goodness I called that girl Ashram.
-World of Ain is the last location's name. Ain? Well, the Japanese character is "mu", the one for nothingess,
emptiness...it can also mean "ain't", so could they have used that? Or since the Azure Demiourgos is the
god of void, maybe they intended the world of void, a void world. Although the kanji for void used for
Demiourgos is different. Uhm. Let's say it is a world where there is nothing at all in it, aside from a holed
up princess to save.
-Celestial Globe/Astral Code. Another case where Falcom messes with us. Celestial and Astral are written
the same way. So, why it's not Astral Globe/Astral Code or Celestial Globe/Celestial Code?
Also, the globe part is not a globe, but the kanji for "space", "room". Could it be that the room has got
a spherical shape? Who knows.
-Luciola. Well, she's in this game as the fortuneteller at Michelam. You get it by piecing together all the
tids and bits of info you get through some events while visiting her with specific friends, and other things
like the bound spirits'(shikigami) shapes and so on. These Enforcers never seem to want to die. I also always
wondered why Luciola and not Lucciola, "firefly". You English speaking people would've read it Luciola anyway,
since you really, really, REALLY hate double consonants... ;)
-CGF grades vs. CDA grades...ehr, I took notes about this topic somewhere but I can't find them anymore...
Also, State Guard should be CDA, C.I.D.A. or Defense Army, although aside from the textures you'll see,
Falcom never gives any official translation for 国防軍, so based on the events and the shortened forms, I
can only speculate that CDA is Crossbell Defense Army and C.I.D.A. is Crossbell Independent Defense Army.
All I wanted for Christmas was an Aion, but what I got was a pair of socks. Next year, maybe.
